Mathematics courses explained

 

In the month of April, a Pre-Algebra Readiness Test is administered once to all San Rafael 5th graders to determine whether a student should be enrolled in the on-level 6th grade math course or if they are ready to skip a year of mathematics instruction and jump straight into Pre-Algebra.  To qualify to take Pre-Algebra as a 6th grader, the student must score 90% or higher on the Pre-Algebra readiness test.  At the end of a student's 6th grade year, a parent can request that a student enrolled in Math 6 take the Algebra Readiness Test. If the student scores 90% or higher, they would skip Pre-Algebra and be enrolled in Algebra.

Regardless of which course is taken in the 6th grade, all DMS students will be on track to meet and exceed the UC and CSU entrance requirements in high school - being able to take advanced placement (AP) calculus in their Junior or Senior year, and illustrated in the diagram below.
