10 Truths Middle Schoolers Should Know-Fun Read

Student assessment score reports to be released to schools in September

San Rafael City Schools students participated in the new computerized assessments known as Smarter Balanced assessments last spring. The assessments are new, computer-based tests that measure student knowledge of California’s English language arts and mathematics standards for grades 3-8 and 11. Originally, schools were told to expect the score reports for these assessments during our summer break. However, state officials now say they plan to release the scores in early September. If everything goes according to plan, parents should expect to see student score reports this fall.

Officials say that because this is the first time results on the new assessments will be released, they want to take extra care and make sure everything is accurate and complete before the official release in September. A date for these reports has not been announced. “We are taking an abundance of caution to ensure that the substantial amount of data we are receiving is properly collected and placed in new files on a new site,” department spokeswoman Pam Slater stated. “Additionally, the department will be launching a new website to display the results and needs sufficient time to test the new site.”

It is important to remember that the assessment system is new, therefore student score reports will also be new and look differently. The new tests in English language arts and mathematics are too fundamentally different from the old exams to make any reliable comparisons between old scores and new. That’s why this year’s scores are better thought of as a starting point -- a baseline for the progress we expect students to make over time.

We will keep parents and families updated with any new information we receive. Thank you for your patience.

California Gold Ribbon Schools Program/ Programa de las Escuelas del Liston Dorado de California.

A new program for 2015-2016 which honors some of California's outstanding public schools. Schools that are selected demonstrate exemplary achievements in implementing state standards in priority areas.

The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to have a program focused on honoring schools while the California Distinguished Schools Program is on hiatus during the period of time required for California to transition to new assessment and accountability systems. The new award will recognize middle and high schools in 2015 and elementary schools in 2016.

The focus of the California Gold Ribbon Schools Award will be to recognize California schools that have made tremendous gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education for all students, including English learners. These include, but are not limited to, the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, California English Language Development Standards, Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, and Next Generation Science Standards.
